American Banker Introduces The Most Powerful Women in Banking: NEXT

An expansion of American Banker’s Women in Banking program, spotlighting the C-Suite community leaders of tomorrow

NEW YORK, NY – (December 5, 2018)American Banker, the essential resource for senior executives in banking and financial services, today announced an important new component of The Most Powerful Women in Banking program focused on outstanding professionals in the pipeline who are most likely to ascend to the industry’s seniormost ranks.

The new program, The Most Powerful Women in Banking: NEXT, will spotlight the C-suite community of tomorrow, honoring female leaders 40 years of age or younger whose influence and achievements set them apart. The addition of this new elite cohort of talent fulfills the promise of the Most Powerful Women in Banking program, now entering its 17th year, while also delivering on American Banker’s broader mission to cover the agenda for the industry’s future.

“By calling attention to remarkable women in the talent pipeline, American Banker aims to bring new momentum to the effort to diversify C-suites across the industry,” said Bonnie McGeer, executive editor of American Banker and chair of the Most Powerful Women program. “We have heard many senior executives in our rankings lament the exceedingly slow progress toward gender equality in leadership positions, and we take it as a call to action. We all need to do more.”

Women in Banking: NEXT honorees will be celebrated at a luncheon hosted by American Banker during its annual LEAD conference, a one-day program in the spring that brings together female bankers at all levels from across the country. This full day of professional and personal development features a variety of dynamic presentations, and allows for attendees and teams to learn and connect. Speakers are drawn from atop the Most Powerful Women in Banking ranking. This year’s Women in Banking LEAD conference will take place May 22, 2019, at the Hilton New York.

Women in Banking: NEXT honorees must be nominated by senior executives at their financial institutions. Program eligibility criteria include the following:

  • Applicants must be nominated by one of their mentors or direct managers
  • Applicants must be in their role for at least one year to qualify
  • Applicants must have been a key player in a major initiative for that institution at some point during the previous 18 months
  • Applicants must demonstrate leadership qualities beyond that particular project
  • Applicants must be seen as having C-suite potential

The application period is open until January 15, 2019, after which American Banker’s Most Powerful Women in Banking Committee will select 10 honorees who best demonstrate leadership and evidence of their influence on and enhancement of the financial, cultural or strategic direction of their institutions. Though there is no limit on how many applications may be submitted from a single company, no more than one woman per company will be selected for the Women in Banking: NEXT list.

Since 2001, American Banker’s Most Powerful Women in Banking has recognized the professional achievements and influence of top-performing female executives in banking and financial services. In addition to Women in Banking: NEXT, the annual program honors the 25 Most Powerful Women in Banking, the 25 Most Powerful Women in Finance, the 25 Women to Watch, and the Top Teams in Banking.
