    Ms. Murphree was named as the Vice President for Finance at Emory University effective November 1, 2003.  As the institution’s chief financial officer, she is responsible for the functional areas of Finance, Office of Grant and Contract Accounting, Office of the Controller, Cash and Debt Management, and Procurement and Payment Services, Contract Compliance and Administration, Student Financial Services and Payroll. These areas include over 140 staff members.Ms. Murphree serves on numerous University committees and boards, including the University Ways and Means Committee, Administrative Council, Information Technology Steering Committee, Financial Officers Forum, Compass Sounding Board and Executive Committees, Emory Alliance Credit Union Board, and the Emory Healthcare Pension Board. In addition, she serves as a liaison to the Emory Finance Committee of the Board of TrusteesPrior to her current role, Ms. Murphree served as Associate Vice President of Administration and as Associate Vice President for Finance and Controller at Emory.  Before coming to Emory in 1987, Ms. Murphree worked for the University of Alabama as the Director of Financial Accounting and Reporting where she started her higher education career in 1978.  Ms. Murphree graduated from the University of Alabama with a bachelor of science in accounting.  She earned a master’s degree of business administration in finance from Georgia State University.

    Chas Cardall, a partner in the San Francisco office, is a member of the Tax Department and the Public Finance Department. Mr. Cardall primarily focuses his practice on municipal finance tax and nonprofit corporation tax matters. Mr. Cardall also has legal expertise relating to both charter schools and the federal income tax classification of governmental and quasi-governmental entities. He has consulted on thousands of tax-exempt, build America and tax credit bond issues and has developed deep expertise in almost every tax aspect of municipal finance.Private activity bonds for multifamily housing, solid waste, charter schools and independent schools are areas of particular focus in Mr. Cardall’s practice, as are higher education, short-term and long-term working capital and the various forms of pooled financings. Mr. Cardall also has advised numerous clients experiencing financial distress or bankruptcy in tax matters relating to their municipal bonds. Representative active clients include the State of California, the University of California, the Bay Area Toll Authority, and Charter School Capital. As an advocate, Mr. Cardall represents both government and non-government clients in IRS proceedings, including the various types of tax-exempt bond audits, voluntary compliance (VCAP) requests and requests for private letter rulings. Mr. Cardall has successfully closed IRS examinations relating to solid waste, working capital, healthcare, pooled, multifamily housing, and industrial development bond financings. He has obtained multiple private letter rulings and technical advice memoranda and has been integrally involved in numerous regulation and legislative projects. He has found that a close working relationship with IRS and Treasury Department personnel often is critical to obtaining good results for clients. Mr. Cardall is a regular panelist at industry and bar association seminars on public finance tax topics (most recently on the topics of working capital financing and IRS enforcement) and has lectured to the IRS at their field agent training program.

    Michael Cooney concentrates on matters related to nonprofit and educational organizations and their corporate governance, fundraising, state regulation, and taxation.Mr. Cooney’s practice includes clients such as private colleges and universities, hospitals and health care systems, social clubs, trade associations, private foundations and religious organizations. His work on investing and administering donor-restricted or donor-advised funds is nationally known. He has worked on issues such as tax-exemption and private foundation status, joint ventures both between exempt entities and with for-profit partners, and unrelated business income tax. He has advised clients on corporate governance, from the creation of the corporate entity to its dissolution. In addition, he has experience in fundraising and planned giving matters for non-profit institutions.Mr. Cooney is a member of the American, New York State, and Florida bar associations and the National Association of College and University Attorneys. He is the former chairperson of the Board of Directors of the Rochester Area Community Foundation, and chairperson of the Board of Directors of the World Childhood Foundation.

    Carsten joined Cain Brothers in 1993 to open the firm's Chicago Office. Since joining Cain Brothers, Carsten has been primarily involved with financial advisory engagements on behalf of hospitals and health systems, managed care organizations, ambulatory surgery centers, specialty providers and physician organizations. His engagements have encompassed a broad array of transactions including sales, acquisitions, mergers, joint ventures, and restructurings, as well as the placement of debt and equity. Carsten regularly provides expert testimony in support of valuations, fairness opinions, and other transaction structures.Prior to joining Cain Brothers, Carsten was with Unibank A/S, a predecessor bank to Nordea Bank, in New York, where he was responsible for health care lending. Prior to Unibank, Carsten was a manager with Arthur Andersen & Co., where his health care work included hospital audits, feasibility studies, contract compliance reviews, and merger and acquisition advisory services. Carsten received his MBA in finance from the Stern School of Business, New York University and is an Honors College graduate of Michigan State University. Carsten is a CPA and a frequent speaker at health care conferences on topics such as mergers and acquisitions, capital markets, valuations and fairness opinions. Carsten is a native of Denmark.

    Len directs NYIT’s financial activities and also supervises real estate, extended education, and food service activities. Before joining NYIT in 2003, he was President and CEO of NYU Downtown Hospital, a community teaching hospital located near the World Trade Center. He led the hospital’s direct participation in the events of September 11, 2001. Len had previously served as the Hospital’s CFO and directed a financial turnaround and major rebuilding project. He also has extensive financial and management experience with New York City’s Health and Hospitals Corporation, Office of Economic Development, and Office of Management and Budget. He holds a MBA from Baruch College, CUNY, MPA from the Maxwell School at Syracuse University, and a BBA from the University of Massachusetts.

    Mark Stockwell is Director of Municipal Research at PNC Capital Advisors in Philadelphia.  He is responsible for overseeing the evaluation of municipal securities purchased for individual portfolios and PNC’s municipal bond and money market funds.  Mr. Stockwell is responsible for reviewing tax-backed bonds in California and the western region, and Puerto Rico, and the transportation sector. Prior to his work at PNC, Mr. Stockwell was a Principal and Senior Municipal Bond Analyst at Vanguard, responsible for the evaluation of municipal securities purchased for Vanguard's municipal bond and money market funds.  His analytical responsibilities included the review of tax-backed bonds in California, Texas and the western region as well as the Transportation and Land-Secured sectors. His work as a financial advisor with Evensen Dodge, Inc. in Minneapolis and as a consultant with Katz Hollis in Los Angeles and Sacramento focused on structuring municipal bond transactions and the analysis of revenues generated from tax increment, special assessment and public-private partnership projects.Mr. Stockwell currently serves as Chairman of the Board of Governors of the National Federation of Municipal Analysts (NFMA).  He has also served the NFMA as co-chair of the NFMA Annual Conference, the Education Committee, and the Recommended Best Practices in Disclosure for Tax Increment-Backed Bond Issues Committee.Mr. Stockwell has a B.A. degree in Political Science and Economics/Business from Westmont College in Santa Barbara, CA and a Master of Public Administration and a Master of Planning, both from the University of Southern California.

    Mr. Malmstrom is the manager of the Merrill Lynch Health Care Group. He has worked in health care at Merrill Lynch since September 1978 when Merrill Lynch acquired First America Health Facility Advisors, Inc. Mr. Malmstrom was a principal of First America and president of its mortgage banking subsidiary. Under his leadership Merrill Lynch has been a leading firm in health care finance. Mr. Malmstrom has served as senior banker and strategic advisor for all types of health care facilities ranging from large multi-hospital systems and medical group practices to smaller community hospitals. He is experienced in implementing all financing techniques available to health care providers including: tax-exempt and taxable bonds and notes, demand/tender obligations, debt restructuring and refunding, off balance sheet financings, master indentures and pooled credits, as well as government assisted programs such as FHA.Mr. Malmstrom's principal activities have centered around creating a challenging environment where talented professionals working as a team produce innovative and low cost financing structures that meet the needs of Merrill Lynch's health care clients and the Industry generally.More recently he has taken a leadership role in assuring Merrill’s clients of access to capital by using innovative credit and derivative structures.Mr. Malmstrom holds a B.A. from Columbia University (1965).     Janette has been the Chief Accounting Officer at Renown Health in Reno, Nevada since 2009. Renown Health is an integrated health network that provides healthcare services at all levels, including acute care, home care, sub-acute care, multi-disciplinary medical practices, outpatient imaging and health insurance. As Chief Accounting Officer, Janette oversees the budget, accounting, tax, treasury, payroll, accounts payable, payroll and reimbursement functions for the health network. Janette graduated from Oregon State University in 1997 with a degree in accounting. She started her career in public accounting and earned her CPA in 1999. Janette has worked in the finance departments of non-profit hospitals and health networks since 2000. Prior to Renown, Janette worked at Salem Hospital in Salem, Oregon, Oregon Health Sciences University and Providence Health and Services in Portland, Oregon.

    As Vanderbilt University’s Vice Chancellor for Finance & Chief Financial Officer, Brett Sweet is responsible for the financial stewardship of the University, including capital and operating budgets, financial affairs and reporting, procurement and debt/treasury management.Prior to joining Vanderbilt, Sweet was dean of administration and finance of Harvard University’s Faculty of Arts and Sciences. In this role he oversaw the financial and administrative operations of the Faculty of Arts and Sciences, which encompasses Harvard College, the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences, The School of Engineering and Applied Science and the Division of Continuing Education.From 2004 to 2008, Sweet served as executive vice president of finance and administration and chief financial officer at Baylor College of Medicine. He was responsible for the college’s finances, capital markets management, information technology, human resources, facilities, research administration, business operations and investment management.From 2000 to 2004, Sweet was a principal with The Boston Consulting Group in the United States and in Europe, where his emphasis was on competitive strategies and change management in large, multinational organizations as well as academic medical centers and colleges.Sweet, a graduate of the U.S. Naval Academy, earned a master of business administration from Harvard University Graduate School of Business Administration.He spent five years as a nuclear submarine officer in the U.S. Navy and served as a special projects officer with the National Security Agency.Sweet lives in Nashville with his wife, Meredythe, and two daughters, Logan and Avery.
